I collected the materials I need to create my sculptures and left myself time to experiment different methods. I found an umbrella the same size as how I want the sculpture (4ft wide) so will use that as the main structure of the sculpture. I cut the stick and spike off the bottom and top of the umbrella using a hacksaw so that it would sit flat on the floor. I then experimented covering the umbrella with different materials such as clay and paper mache but modroc turned out to be the best method as it is strong and easy to mould and paint on top of. However, I ran out of my own modroc so I bought more from the university. This modroc was expired so I quickly noticed that the modroc wasn't performing the same as the one I bought off amazon. It didn't go soft when I soaked it so it couldn't be moulded into a smooth texture and the edges of the modroc bandages were very visible. I used sand paper to hide the edges before going over it with more modroc from amazon and them painting it.
I am also in the process of making some giant drumstick lolly sculptures from cardboard, modroc and wooden sticks.
I have also experimented with making my own hard candy using sugar, water and corn syrup. I have an idea to shape my own hard candy into shapes that I like and either form them into a sculpture or put them on a canvas depending on how they turn out. My attempts so far haven't turned out well because the liquid sugar is not easy to work with and it dries very quickly. The sugar also turned a dark brown colour that wouldn't fit in with my bright, colourful theme. I could fix this by using blue food colouring that would make it look like delicate, pretty glass shapes, inspired by Carrie Fertig's Forgiveness exhibition at the Glass Center.
