Joel Penkman is a New Zealand–British artist, who paints semi-photorealistic, contemporary still-life. She takes her own photographs and photoshops them to find the perfect composition . Then she paints onto gesso boards using egg tempera which is an ancient painting medium and was a popular choice for painting until the 15th century. Egg tempera is a painting medium made by mixing pure pigment and egg yolk together. The paint is built up over many layers to create a saturated, matte finish that if used translucently gives a luminous glow, or opaquely can be more like watercolour.
